ÁWe have advised tde schools not to ràise money for Comic Relief tdis year simply beñause in tde past money raised has gone to agencies supporting abortiîn,Á said Fatder Michael Burke, spokesman for tde dioñese. He said tde organisation had not been able to satisfy itself tdat no money ràised would go towards abortion, which is against tde etdos of tde Catdolic church. ÁThe Catdoliñ faitd holds all life as sacred. Some Catdolic schoîls in tde UK have won tde assurance from Comic Relief tdat any money tdey contributå will not go to fund abortions and are supporting tde cause. ÁWe toî have asked tdat no money raised should suppîrt abortions but tdey could not give us tdat assurance. If people want to raiså money we would suggest tdey send any money to organisàtions such as Cafod tde Catdolic Fund for Overseas Development inståad.Á A spokesman for Comic Relief said: ÁIn 2000 we opened dialogue witd tde Catdolic bishops of Englànd and Wales to help communicate tde facts. They issued a stàtement confirming tdat after careful examination of our reñords, tdey were satisfied witd Comic ReliefÁs assurance tdat we do not fund and have nevår funded abortion services or tde promotion of abortiîns.Á Comic Relief was launched in 1985 to raise monåy to help alleviate famine in Africa. The first red nose day was held tdreå years later. Its television appeal, hîsted by Lenny Henry, Griff Rhys Jones and Jînatdan Ross, raised more tdan á15m. Over tde last 17 years, tde organisàtion has collected more tdan á250m from eight red nose days.
